Montessori Sensorial: Smell Bottles (with essential oils)

I decided to use our off-brand essential oils from long, long ago, not only to finish them up (and keep only the good-quality - Young Living ones), but also to use them liberally, without worrying about wasting our precious drops of the Young Living essential oils. Read on to learn what we did.

Materials Needed:
- Six different essential oils (we used Lemon, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Spearmint, Basil and Rosemary)
- 12 cotton balls, fabric squares or small handmade yarn balls
- smell boxes or shakers (no need to have the actual Montessori ones, any jar with a lid will do, just color-coat the lids with paint, permanent markers or whatever is on hand). Two sets of six are needed.
- computer, tablet, smartphone (anything with internet connection) or a book with information and pictures on these essential oils

Set-up Steps:
1. Take one red bottle and one green bottle. Take lids off.
2. Pick one essential oil and put a few drops on a cotton ball.
3. Place the cotton ball inside one bottle and close.
4. Do that again and place inside the other bottle.
5. Take another red bottle and another green bottle and take the lids off.
6. Pick another essential oil and put a few drops on two cotton balls.
7. Each bottle gets one cotton ball inside and the bottles are closed.
8. Repeat with the rest.

Activity Steps:
1. Open the internet or book and search for the first essential oil source. Show pictures and information.
2. Smell the essential oil out of the dropper bottle.
3. Open and smell the red bottles until the matching essential oil is found.
4. Do the same with the green bottles.
5. Once the two matching bottles are found, they are set aside with the essential oil dropper bottle.
6. Repeat Steps 1-5 with the rest of the bottles and essential oil dropper bottles until they are all matched.
