Parts of a Stem

Definitions

1. Stem: The main part of the plant that is above ground and that supports the branches, leaves, flowers, fruit, etc.

2. Node: The section where the leaf branches out of the stem.

3. Internode: The part of the stem that is between two nodes.

4. Axil: The area on the onside or upper end of the node that helps support the branch or leaf. It looks like a tiny bud on top of the node.

He's doing so well, for an almost 3.5-year old.

K can read this perfectly. This is a brand new story
(never read by him or by me before) and he read it perfectly and more fluently.

Even though the Arctic isn't a continent, I included it in the lesson because it would be good to introduce it now.

North America and South America folders. I included monuments, typical flora and fauna, as well as important places. I hope to keep adding more cards with these pictures as time goes by. Maybe in a few months, I can plan another continents lesson, but where K and I look through National Geographic Kids magazines to find more of these pictures together. Honestly, I printed some fo them and it can get really expensive, especially because the prints are in color.

Montessori Science (Botany): Parts of a Leaf

Nomenclature

We went out to our front yard to gather several kinds of leaves and brought them inside.

As we discussed the different parts of a leaf using the nomenclature, we would look at the same part on the real leaves.

Then we did the Nomenclature Cards with the answer key open. K wasn't ready to do it on his own (by heart) yet. We will repeat this lesson soon and hopefully, he will remember more. After all, this is a lot to remember, so no rush.

We went to the local public library today. They were having a homeschooling sale. I found some really neat stuff for either really cheap or for free. As we were exploring the kids' section, we found these on the wall. Magnetic letters. What I think they did was paint the wall with magnetic paint and then used regular paint to cover it. That is why the wall is magnetic. Gosh, what a great idea to keep in mind for when we live in a house we own and we have an actual schoolroom.

A had a lot of fun with these. I wish I could do it now!

Then we ran some errands and decided to stop by a pet shop. We called it a field trip, too. It is always fun to watch the kids be all excited about animals. We don't have pets right now, but maybe someday we will.
